Stratified Medicine Core Laboratory (SMCL) Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Hub

The Stratified Medicine Core Laboratory (SMCL) Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Hub at the University of Cambridge is a multiOmics research facility specialising in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies and dedicated to advancing translational research for both academia and industry.  Established in 2015 with initial funding from an MRC grant, the Hub is now partially supported by the NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) grant. Serving academic, clinical, and industrial communities, we offer tailored solutions for a wide range of multi-omics projects, including genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic studies, as well as NGS-based proteomic technologies.

Combining technical expertise, advanced equipment, and a collaborative approach, we are committed to supporting your research—whether addressing fundamental scientific questions or implementing translational projects.

The SMCL NGS Hub is hosted by the Department of Genomic Medicine and co-located with the NHS East Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH), putting us at the forefront of cutting-edge research and development in translational ‘omics. We offer state-of-the-art NGS services as the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Genomic Core Facility.

We undertake a wide range of projects, from large-scale initiatives involving thousands of samples to those focused on a few precious samples aimed at addressing complex cases.

A major feature of SMCL is its strategic alliance with the Cambridge Genomics Laboratory of the NHS East GLH, reinforcing our dedication to translational research and facilitating the translation of genomic advances into clinical settings. This close collaboration with the GLH fosters dynamic knowledge interchange, expertise sharing, and resource collaboration, creating an environment conducive to scientific progress and clinical impact.

Beyond scientific excellence, the SMCL NGS Hub is a catalyst for innovation and collaboration with industry partners, engaging in creative approaches and building partnerships with Cambridge-based start-ups and international companies.
